I’m a working mum so I know what it’s like to run round like a headless chicken all day, never quite catching your tail and very rarely achieving what you set out to do in the first place! Busy business owners often feel the same way and as a VA it’s my job to make their life more ordered, more efficient and less stressful, I’m there to make sure the chicken takes a break!
However working families need this support too; juggling family diaries, parties, appointments, house repairs, car servicing, holiday booking, travel arrangement etc. can be just as exhausting.
Wikipedia states ‘Work–life balance is the term used to describe the balance that an individual needs between time allocated for work and other aspects of life. Areas of life other than work-life can be, but not limited to personal interests, family and social or leisure activities.’ However how many of us feel that life quickly becomes like work and we have no balance but more of a tightrope situation where we are just about managing to stay on the rope?
A quick google search on this topic brings up a plethora (love that word) of suggestions on how to achieve this mythical ‘work life balance’.
The Mental Health Foundation suggests the following:
- Take personal responsibility for your work-life balance
- Try to ‘work smart, not long’
- Take proper breaks at work
- Try to ensure that a line is drawn between work and leisure
- Take seriously the link between work-related stress and mental ill health
- Recognise the importance of exercise, leisure activities and friendships
- Watch out for the cumulative effect of working long hours
Whilst I agree wholeheartedly with all the above I do believe they have missed off something very important….ask for help. We should never be afraid to say that we can’t do everything, much as I try I have never manage to get that superhero status, I can’t tidy and clean a room up by spinning round really fast like superwomen which is why I have a cleaner and someone to do my ironing. No I’m not rich but I make sacrifices elsewhere as the time this gives me back with my family is worth every penny. Also, they do it far better and probably quicker than I ever would as I would get distracted….bored….and quite frankly rather be doing something else.
As VA I actually enjoy doing the home admin, there is nothing that pleases me more than a ticked off ‘to do’ list and a colour coded calendar, however I am aware this is not the case for everyone.
That is why I am also a lifestyle VA. Busy working families may have enough admin support at work but home is another animal, it can be chaos trying to fit everything in and still have time for your loved ones which is where I can help. I can plan a party, keep on top of bills, co-ordinate the family diary, source and book tradesmen, make sure cars are serviced and MOT’d at the right time and if you are lucky enough to live close to me I can always be at home to supervise the tradesmen, receive deliveries and if you are on holiday water your plants and notify you of any urgent post.
